New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday hosted “Clean and Green” campaign to support environmental sustainability and community involvement.
“In a demonstration of its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) successfully conducted a “Clean and Green” campaign on 10th August 2024,” as per a press release from JNU.
The event, organized in collaboration with ISHAN BODH, NISHREYAS, and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), witnessed enthusiastic participation from across the JNU community and beyond, reinforcing the university’s role as a leader in promoting eco-friendly initiatives.
“The campaign featured a highly anticipated cyclothon, attracting 554 cyclists who embarked on an 11 km journey starting from the JNU Administration Office. The scenic route, which passed through Nelson Mandela Marg and Vasant Kunj, culminated back at the university campus,” the release stated.
The event was honoured by the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Water Transport, Government of India who served as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Sonowal highlighted the critical importance of environmental preservation, referencing ancient Sanskrit scriptures to emphasize our collective responsibility in safeguarding the planet.
He also reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment, under the stewardship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Sonowal had the privilege of flagging off the cycle rally, commending JNU and its co-organizers for their visionary approach to raising environmental awareness.
“In addition to the cyclothon, the event included a significant tree plantation drive, with 200 different varieties of fruit trees being planted across the JNU campus. The tree plantation drive symbolises a long-term investment in the environment, aimed at creating a sustainable and thriving ecosystem for future generations,” as per the release.
The event also featured the participation of Dilip Saikia, Member of Parliament from Assam, and Lumbaram Choudhary, Member of Parliament from Rajasthan, both of whom expressed their appreciation for JNU’s proactive environmental conservation efforts.
The event commenced with JNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit warmly welcoming all guests and participants. She reaffirmed JNU’s commitment to environmental preservation and emphasized the university’s mission to support students from marginalized communities across India.
“Professor Manuradha Chaudhary, Dean of Students, provided a comprehensive overview of the day’s activities and expressed sincere gratitude to the event’s sponsors, Deendayal Port Authority and NHPC, whose support was crucial to the campaign’s success,” as per the release.
The day concluded with a recognition ceremony, where cyclists were awarded medallions, mementos, and T-shirts in appreciation of their participation and dedication to the cause. (ANI)
