Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 21 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday criticised the BJP-led government over environmental degradation across the state, highlighting issues ranging from mangrove cutting to forest encroachment and riverfront projects.
“Over the past few years, we have seen Mumbai and other cities choke. Our food systems are collapsing due to the erratic monsoons. Climate has hit the core of our state’s efficiency and productivity. Yet the BJP regime is cutting 45,000 mangroves and ‘compensating’ them 900 kms away- in Chandrapur,” Thackeray said in a post on X.
Speaking about mining in tiger corridors, he added, “Speaking of Chandrapur, the regime has opened up Mining in an important Tiger corridor (may be compensatory planting shown in Mumbai). Ensuring Mumbai’s air quality surpasses Delhi by appeasing their contractor buddies. Cutting 1800 trees at the holy site of Tapovan in Nashik. Ajni Vann in Nagpur stands as a target for the government, to be hacked and concretised.”
He further criticised urban planning and infrastructure projects, saying, “The Sanjay Gandhi National Park master plan being worked on to reduce forest cover, legalise illegal bungalows/ hotels of ministers. Killing the BEST bus, which provided affordable and green public transit for millions of Mumbaikars- for private interests. Ensuring Pune floods due to haphazardly planned ‘Riverfront Development’ project. Giving away Mumbai’s green spaces like the racecourse for clubhouse and construction for builder buddies, and greenwashing it with a park plan displayed publicly.”
Thackeray concluded his post by questioning the government’s environmental priorities, “They have a great opportunity of pitching this at the Mumbai Climate Week, unless they hire PR to greenwash this and make this sound beautiful. The only way to greenwash this is to convince us all that the BJP regime is preparing us to live on a landscape like Mars- by converting Maharashtra into one big desert.” (ANI)
