Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 24 (ANI): As US President Donald Trump bars Harvard University from enrolling International students, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) on Saturday urged the Central government to “put their foot down” and ensure Indian students “get justice” .
“I think the central government needs to put their foot down and make sure that the Indian students get justice. Whoever was there in the Harvard University must get justice,” Clyde Crasto, spokesperson of NCP-SCP told ANI in Mumbai.
“The Trump administration has taken certain decisions. The federal government also along with them, has taken a decision. Now that’s their right. What the government does is their prerogative. But the point here is when we talk about foreign students being barred from Harvard University, that also involves our Indian students,” he added.
Crasto claimed that nearly 800 Indian students will be impacted by the US administration’s decision, with families spending crores to ensure their children study in US.
“Nearly 800 students will suffer if this whole rule is implemented. Now the role of the Indian government is very important. How they deal with the Trump administration is the point that we need to look into, because students have spent money. Nearly each student spends close to Rs 2 crore. That’s hard earned money. Whether it’s from a rich family, or from a middle class or a poor family, parents work hard to give their students that kind of money to enrol in that kind of university,” Crasto said.
He added, “The Indian government now must make sure that all these 800 students are protected so that if something goes wrong, will they get a refund? Will they be adjusted in some other universities because if they’re not taken there, they will lose a year. That’s a setback in their career.”
Harvard and the Trump administration have been engaged in a conflict for months as the administration demands the university make changes to the programmes of the institution, hiring and administration to remove on-campus antisemitism and remove what it termed “racist ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ practices.”
The administration has targeted foreign students and employees, whom it believes were part of the contentious campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war. Since then, a judge has issued a temporary restraining order after Harvard filed a lawsuit on the issue. (ANI)
